Dull pain where I had my stress fracture

I’ve been concerned all day today about a dull pain I’ve had just above where I had my stress fracture last year.

I haven’t got any pains elsewhere, and it doesn’t seem to be worse when I’m walking. It just feels like someone has kicked me in the ankle. I’m hoping that it’s just the tendons around the area, rather than an inflammation of anything else. I’ll ice it for a bit in a minute, and hope that it clears up by the morning.

I’m due for a 3.5 mile run tomorrow evening, but I’ll have to see how I go.

Achilles pain now linked to custom made orthotics?

This is really starting to annoy me now! It seems that every time my achilles pain gets better ti then gets worse again.

I woke up this morning and the pain was probably worse than it’s been for a couple of weeks. I made sure I did a few achilles tendon stretches before leaving for work and this certainly helped, but now I feel like I’ve got a minor shooting pain every now and again in each of the tendons.

Is my stress fracture coming back again?

I woke up this morning with a pain right where my stress fracture was. It’s not an intense pain, just a kind of dull pain when I move my foot in a certain direction or when I put weight on my toes. It doesn’t feel like a muscular pain, and if I press against the bone it does hurt.

Getting custom made running orthotics - the process I went through

Getting fitted for running orthotics

The process I went through when I had my running orthotics made for me was really very simple.

I first of all chatted to my podiatrist about what my problem was. In my case this was very easy… I had a stress fracture in my left fibula and my physiotherapist had told me that I was overpronating. It didn’t take my podiatrist long to reiterate this position. She said it was blatantly clear that I was overpronating and that custom made orthotics for running were really the only option.

My physio can’t do anything for the stress fracture - so it’s time for some custom made orthotics.

I went to see the physio earlier today about my stress fracture - and as I thought they said there was pretty much nothing they could do for me to aid the healing process. As the fracture is bone, it just needs time and rest in order to heal itself.
The best thing I could do for myself in the meantime though is to see a podiatrist in order to get fitted for some custom made orthotics. These would correct my overpronation and hopefully stop me from getting any stress fractures in the future.

The results are in… I do have a stress fracture of the fibula.

After lots of chasing I managed to get through to my doctor today and the results of my isotope bone scan show that I do have a stress fracture of the fibula.

At last, finally I get the confirmation of what my physio thought all those weeks ago!

Now I know it is a stress fracture I’m going to see the physio this Saturday to see what the next course of treatment is.

I had an isotope bone scan today…

I had the isotope bone scan today to find out if it is a stress fracture I have in my fibula. It wasn’t half as scary as the information I received the other day made it out to be. The worst thing was finding a car space at the hospital (twice!).

I turned up initially at 11am this morning. After waiting for a few minutes a nurse took me into a room that had a big scanner in it with a stretcher type bed thing attached to it. This scanner was like one of those big washing machine things you see on TV. Not as big as a CT machine… and not as scary at all. There was no control room and no screens… so it just seemed like a bed with a big circular thing attached at the end!

I’ve got my appointment through for a bone scan to see if I have a stress fracture

I’ve finally received an appointment through to have a bone scan to find out what’s wrong with me leg. It sounds pretty scary - it’s actually called an isotope bone scan - part of the nuclear medicine facilities at the local NHS hospital.

Got the X-Ray results - ‘indicative of stress fracture’

Well I finally had the call from my GP with the results to m X-Ray I had a couple of weeks ago…

The radiologist has said that there are medical signs that are indicative of a stress fracture in the fibula. But, just as my physio said, the X-Ray isn’t conclusive so my GP is now going to refer me for an isotope bone scan.

I feel slightly relieved that first of all the physio was right, and secondly that I’m close to knowing just what’s wrong.

I really am missing running now. Swimming just doesn’t cut it.

Just had an X-Ray to see if I do have a stress fracture

As my physio told me last week that I may well have a stress fracture, I got a referral from my GP to have an X-Ray. Good job I’ve got private medical insurance!

Anyway, I had the X-Ray earlier today and it really was a quick process. I laid on the bed and the radiologist took 2 X-Rays of my ankle - strangely neither of which were pointing directly at where the injury is.

I’ve only got a slight limp now and when I said to the radiologist that the physio thought it was a stress fracture she just laughed and said ‘you wouldn’t be able to walk like that if it was a fracture!’. Don’t you love getting a diagnosis in such a professional manner!?

I may have a stress fracture!

I’ve just got back from the physio and am absolutely gutted. It turns out I could well have a stress fracture of my fibula.

The fibula is the smallest of the two bones in the calf - and apparently it’s not as bad getting a stress fracture in this bone as it’s non-weight baring - as opposed to the tibia in the calf that supports pretty much all of your weight.

This pain is unbelievable!

It’s Monday morning, and the pain hasn’t got any better from yesterday’s running injury.

I’ve phoned in sick to work - seeing as walking is impossible… let alone driving! I can barely put any weight on to my left foot and bending the ankle is nigh on impossible.

Just got back from the Doctors. To be honest she didn’t have a clue what the problem was. She said it was likely to be some kind of tendonitis, and that the pain should go within 3 to 5 days. But if it doesn’t then I should contact a sports physiotherapist.

I think I have a serious running injury!

I’ve just got back from a 6 mile run. Well, to be honest it was a 4 mile run and a 2 mile hobble.

Before I set off I had quite a tight left calf… the kind of feeling I’ve had on numerous occasions in the past. The kind of pain that felt like it would go over a short warm up. And after about 5 mins of gentle running the pain did subside. Then after about 3 miles it hit me. A real tight feeling in the left calf again. Kind of like a really tight thin wire being pulled up the outside left part of the calf.

I stopped and rubbed the calf and did some stretches, but the pain just didn’t subside. I could barely job, let alone run. For the ast couple of miles I had to hobble home. Why do things like this happen when you’re half way out on a single loop run!?

Anyway, after a long session of stretching and a warm shower, I can now barely bend my left ankle. I can’t even walk down the stairs properly. I had to come down on my backside.

God only knows what this is. I guess it could be a tendon that’s gone or something.

Let’s hope it gets better in the morning.
