I know how you feel. I was diagnosed with a fibular stress fracture back in early March. I just get over that and am cleared to run again when I get severe hip pain. I was diagnosed via MRI and X-rays with two pelvic strss fractures on 04/15/09, which made me miss the Boston Marathon on 04/20/09. I had worked hard for 3 years and had qualified last October and was so close to running it. I had to cancel the airfare, hotel, etc.

Now it's 8 more weeks off and hoping I don't get more stress fractures when I'm cleared to run again. The hard thing is that after the 8 weeks off, I'm supposed to do a 7 week slow gradual return to running to get my body used to weight bearing activity again, or risk another or the same stress fracture.

I did find a link between low fat intake and stress fractures in female runners.
http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/articlerender.fcgi?artid=2235827

I increased my intake of the "good fats" by adding almonds and fish oil to my diet. The doctor also recommended increasing my calcium and Vitamin D. Apparently, the low fat intake could have been hindering Vitamin D absorption.

I tried to do 2 miles yesterday after only 2 weeks off from the pelvic stress fractures (against doctor's recommendations). The first mile hurt really bad - the second mile was better. But then I was much worse the rest of the day. I realize now that I'm going to have to listen to the doctor and let my body heal.

My doctor said I could do deep water running and I found a site with an 8 week workout plan. Our city and the surrounding cities all have public swim hours at the local natatoriums and it only cost between $1.50 to $4.00 for a session using a lap swim lane (which is what I use for a deep water run).

But no matter how hard I try, I can't seem to get my heart rate up to the same level as running with any other activity.

Having just read your post i know exactly how you feel. Am just starting running again after a stress fracture to my tibia. Although am taking it easy and only running 2-3 times weekly am starting to get an intermitant dull ache where my fracture was and a bit of tenderness, its so frustrating as have already had 3 months off from running. If i was near a wall I would bang my head against it!
