Breaking in my new custom made orthotics
So, it’s been 7 days now breaking in my new custom made orthotics. Still no running though! Aaarrgghh!
It’s been quite a strange week really, and I haven’t been that active - so I haven’t really walked very far. Which I guess has been good, as my Podiatrist advised that I should only wear my new custom made orthotics for short periods each day (of about 15 minute chunks). In fact I’ve worn them pretty much all day every day (slap my wrists!).
It’s interesting how the orthotics feel so different in every pair of shoes I’ve got. Some of the shoes that didn’t feel that comfortable now fell great with the orthotics in them. I’ve got really thin feet, so it makes a change that shoes actually fit me well now - without the laces pulled really tight.
The left orthotic now feels great. I can hardly feel it’s there. The right orthotic meanwhile still feels slightly uncomfortable - kind of like the kids have left one of their toys in my shoe! I can’t understand how people can buy of the shelf orthotics now. I really am seeing the benefits of getting custom made orthotics fitted to your exact requirements.
I don’t think I’ve had any adverse reactions to wearing the orthotics. My knees feel ever so slightly sore - but certainly not bad enough for me to notice without thinking about it (if that makes any sense!?). My achilles tendons have still been sore and tight in the mornings, but what I have noticed is that it’s now much more comfortable when I perform an achilles stretch with my right foot. It’s now just a lot easier to get my foot ‘in-line’ - i.e. pointing forward with my right knee placed directly above it and also pointing directly forward. I can only assume that this is down to the orthotics getting my feet/knees in the right line throughout the day, which in turn is reducing the twisting of my achilles tendon.
So, anyway, another 5 days and I’ll be back with the Podiatrist to see if my orthotics need any tweaks. May as well get the most out of the ‘custom made’ aspect!
btw: The non-running is really annoying me now. Swimming is just not the same!
